Recently, we've changed our LAN structure from a 10M hub environment into a 100M switched one (catalyst 4006 backbone and catalyst 3524 on the floors). Now we've problems to monitor our data traffic due to the fact that every port on the switch is in fact a separate segment. Does anyone have an idea about how to tackle this problem without buying expensive monitoring software (freeware ? commands on catalysts ?)
Thks for your help but that's not exactly what I'm looking for. I'm trying to find a command or a tool that can give me almost the same information as a LAN analyzer.
This was very simple in an environment with hubs. We could plug our laptop with sniffer software in a free port of the hub to analyze the traffic of that segment. This isn't possible anymore in a switched environment and therefore I'm looking for a way to get the same information in the new setup.
You can get pretty much the same results if you monitor a VLAN rather than each indivdual port. you still have to be sure that you are monitoring a physical path that the packet(s) have to travel. For instance, If you have a monitor port on your 4006 and you are trying to monitor between two ports on the same 3500 you will not see anything but broadcasts.
There is also a feature called RSPAN that will allow you to monitor multiple ports to a common destination in your network. This requires a supIII or IV on the 4006. I am not sure of the code level for 3500s though. You should be able to find more informaltion on RSPAN by doing a search.
Have you tried a Data General Sniffer. There is a Switch monitor app which gives port utilis Have not used it much but better than nothing, or could try OPTIVIEW by Fluke A hand held device which has Rmon, Not cheap but the demo given looked good
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
