Where and on what merits should I position Rendezvous Points in a network consisting of:

a)Edge Layer 2 devices dual connected to two Layer 3 Core switches

b)Both Core Layer 3 switches connected with full meshed links to two pairs of Layer 3 Server Layer switches.

c)Multicast application servers will connect to Server Layer switches

Hi Ed,

in this situation making the server switches the RPs wouldn't be a bad configuration.

However the positioning of the RP is largely application driven or totally irrelevant as the RP is only used for intial mutlicast tree construction and once the sources are learnt will generally flow through the shortest path tree which the RP may not be part of.

Take a look at <ftp://ftp-eng.cisco.com/ipmulticast.html> as this has many good docs on the subject, or email me direct at stevep@cisco.com
