Multicast traffic configuration

Hi,

Should we configure PIM protocol on all vlan interfaces or just on Vlans with multicast?

Let say we have vlan 1 for management vlan 2 for servers vlan 3 for clients and vlan 4 for production. Vlan 2 and 4 have multicast applications, the vlans 1 and 3 do not use multicast application.

Should we configure PIM on every vlan?

You don't need to enable PIM on interfaces that will not be used to carry multicast traffic.

Harold is entirely correct that you do not need to configure PIM on interfaces that will not be used to carry multicast traffic. I think that we need to consider carefully what interfaces will carry multicast traffic. You describe two VLANs that will use multicast and they sound to me like VLANs where multicast may originate. You describe two VLANs that will not use multicast. One of those VLANs is for clients. Is it possible that some of the clients will want to receive the multicast? If so then the client VLAN also needs to be configured with PIM. PIM needs to be configured on interfaces where multicast will originate and also on interfaces where multicast will be received (and on interfaces that provide a path from originators to receivers).
