Hi,

I know basics of multicast with respect to switches and routers configs.

Re: Multicast ???

Hi Rajesh,

Can you clarify what you're trying to accomplish? Most of what you describe, at the general level is automatically done by IGMP/IGMP snooping.

Re: Multicast ???

Hi Bobby,

for eg..I have one server and client separated by router

in the router u can enable multicast routing in the global level and ip pim dense/sparse on interface level

in the switch we can enable igmpsnooping for efficient forwarding.

What i would like to know is how we can make server and client multicast capable? ..by default it will handle only unicast/broadcast.

I thinking that when installing multicat application on server/client we have to feed that multicast group address and other stuffs.

is my understanding is of basic multicast config is correct

or misunderstood?

if i am wrong pls let me know how we will do that?

Re: Multicast ???

Hi Rajesh,

Thanks for the clarification. Your basic understanding does appear to be correct. You are also right in that the multicast application will be responsible for transmitting and processing multicast packets.

Now, the exact behavior of how it all works depends on which version of IGMP your application is using.

Here are a couple of helpful documents that explain it at greater depth:
