Hello,

I have a L2(2950), and L3(3550) Switch, and Router 7200 and 3600 series.

I would like to run IPTV with multicasting, if receivers are connected with the L2 2950 switches.

If any one have a good material about this sceniro or have a paractical experience, provide me some information...

Hello,

check this link out:

Focus on Multicasting on IP Networks and disregard the appletalk portion. There are not L2 devices such as 2950 in the example but 2950 have IGMP Snooping enabled by default and it's really all you need at the Layer 2.

The hardware you list is perfect for multicasting. If you use the 3550's for inter-VLAN routing you must have the IP Services image (EI), since the IP Base (SI) doesn't support inter-VLAN Multicast Routing. The 2950 has IGMP Snooping enabled by default and the routers (7200 & 3600) will support multicast routing in any feature set.

You need to decide whether to use Sparse or Dense mode (Explicit Joins or Flood & Prune). Sparse-Mode seems to be the preferred method but this requires slightly more configuration.

My scanerio is look like this,

7200 ---- 3550 ------ 2950 ------ 2950------2950

3550, with 12 Gig ports, clients are connected with 2950, 7200 router is used for NATing and access-list,

7200 connect with a 3550,

Now if i connect a Multicast Source with router, 1st i enable a "ip multicast-rou" on 7200 series router, and define a "ip pim MODE" on a interface which connect with a 3550 switch,

What is the configuration on a 3550, and 2950(igmp enable by default)..

Assuming that the 3550 is not doing any L3 functions, nothing, as you said IGMP snooping is enabled by default on these teo platfporms. If 7200 and 3550 are talking at L3, then you must ensure that multicast routing is enable and pim are enabled on relevant vlans.

L3 3550 is not doing any Layer 3 function, just working as a VTP server, and some QOS is implemented on it. One thing more can u please tell me a best software which i can use for multicasting Server...
