In the UK we've got a standard 2mb leased line connection to the internet to which we have a PIX connected. Behind the PIX we have an inside network and two DMZ's. The hosts on DMZ2 are using public addresses.
While in the Netherlands we have an indirect connection to AMS-IX which is via another PIX. These hosts are using private addresses internally which are being staticly NAT'ed by the PIX.
On DMZ2 in the UK and the network in the Netherlands we have two routers connected together via a 2mb leased line, this line has only just been installed.
Currently the only routing protocol that we are running is RIPv2 and we only intend to pass our own traffic over the link.
Are the any problems with this configuration, would we get routing loops?
I've tried doing a simple test by pinging a host in the Netherlands by it's public IP address with the link shutdown. I get a reply from the host it was sent to... Though with the link enabled, when I try to ping the public IP address the reply comes from the router in the UK?
Is this type of configuration possible, what would I need to do to make it function correctly?
The link is to pass VOIP traffic over, with the internet connection in the Netherlands being the redundant path. I'm trying to join the two networks together while they each keep their own separate internet connections.
As far as joining the netwoks together is concerned, it should be no problem as packet can route/switch across the 2Mb internal link.
When you talk redundant path over the internet, it has to be a VPN or your packet IPs must be public.
I think you should create a tunnel between the two sites and then you can either use floating static routes or some dynamic routing protocol to detect internal link failure, which would then divert traffic over to the VPN/Internet. For floating statics, you must be able to detect physical link failure at both sites.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
