Can someone help me understand in a multi router and switch network with say native VLan1 and two new VLans(say Vlan20 and Vlan 30), does one still assign an IP address to VLan1 and IP Default-Gateway then configure that gateway IP on the router as a regular interface assignment and not a sub-interface assignment? Or does one assign that IP Default gateway as a sub-interface on the router (2600+ series)along with the other two vlan gateway addresses and allow for 802.1q encapsulation so that interface will in fact act as a trunk interface?

subinterface and trunk it down to the switch.Make sure the native vlan in the router and on the switch match .
