i know upgrading an IOS will have more features like NAT,Multicasting,IPX, etc....., but though my existing switches & routers has the same with the older versions, what is the necessity to upgrade new IOS eg. old IOS ver is 12.1.22 & new ver is 12.2.22, according to my knowledge, i think it would improve the CPU performance over all i would say it will improve the Switch/Rotuer performance. am i right? where i can get exact info in Cisco.com site?
upgrading the IOS does not necessarily improve the performance of your routers and switches. As a matter of fact, the ugraded version might even use more resources, and require more memory (resources). I would say, as a rule of thumb, that, unless you have a need for a specific feature that is not supported in your current IOS, as long as your network is running well, do not upgrade the IOS.
There is a tool on CCO which lets you compare two IOS releases, you need a valid CCO login to access the tool, though.Check if you can access it by clicking on the link below:
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
