what layer does netbios operate at. netbios names operate at the session layer, but a practice exam from cisco says that the protocol operates at layer 2.

Hi,
This is how i learned this, but maybe im wrong...
NetBIOS/NetBEUI was not designed to map to OSI model. You can run NetBEUI over LLC (802.2) or NetBIOS over TCP. SMB service operate at the upper layers.
Depending of choice;
When running over a 802.2 network, SMB service relay on NetBIOS on the session layer, NetBIOS relays on NetBEUI runing on layer 2/3.
When running over TCP, SMB/NetBIOS is encapsulated as a session layer.
