I know this is a loaded questions, but if we have a number of users complaining about a slow network, can anyone recommend some steps to finding the problem.

Wow there are so many unanswered questions but here is were I would start.

First you need to narrow the scope of the problem.

The number of users are they all located on the same floor? in the same department? in the same building? Same subnet? same VLAN?

Is it all applications? the same application?

You could do some file transfers and time them and calculate the speed, this would show any duplexing problems.

Are the users on a switched or HUB network?

Are the users on the same switch or hub?

Does the slowness happen only at certain times of the day? all day but not all the time? or all day all the time?

I could go on and on but I think you can see what I mean about narrowing the scope of the problem.

Also if you have the users connected to a switch, check their ports for errors.

Hope this gets you going in the right direction.

Mike
