New cisco 3640 Setup

Hi,

I’ve recently bought a Cisco 3640 for my company’s network. The router has 1xNM-4FE and 1xSerial-4T module installed.

The router shipped with no IOS image installed so I’ve bought a software feature pack for it (shipped on CD).

I’ve put the CD in my CD-Rom and shared the drive, but cannot connect the router to the CD to install the software. Can anybody help?

Probably your CD should also have a software called RSL (Router Software Loader). How to use it to load the software, you can find it here.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios113ed/fp113rn/cdril2.htm

Or else, simply set up a tftp server on your pc, put the image (.bin file) on the default tftp folder ( you will need to copy it from cd to the tftp folder).

Now the router needs to be configured with an ip address from the same subnet as the tftp server and connected back to back using a cross over cable with the tftp server, or connected through a hub/switch.

router--e0--192.168.1.1----hub/switch/crossover------192.168.1.2---tftpserver(PC)

On the router you ll need to issue the command,

Router>en

Router#copy tftp flash

It will prompt you to enter the ip address of the server, and the file name to be copied.

Hi,

Thanks for that. I've read something somewhere in this mound of documetation about that. The problem is when I type en I get the following response Rommon63>Unrecognised command

You are in Rommon mode. If the router is always booting into this mode, (because the IOS is not in there), you can still load it using the following procedure.

Set the config register to 0x2101 using following command

rommon1>confreg 0x2101

rommon1>reset

Once the router reboots, it will get into Router(boot) mode. This is actually the Boot image on the 3600.

Once you are inside the 3600 you can use the copy tftp flash command to copy the image.

GGrrrr,

When I type tftpdnld I get the following message

Rommon6>Unrecognised command.

Is the router broke? I'm starting to think that cisco surely wouldn't have developed a system that's so awkward to work with.

tftpdnld is only supported on 2600's

As i have the Cd in my Pc with the Cd shared. Is there no way of browsing the cd from the router and running the install from there?

unless you have another box that you can take a PCMCIA card from and load the image from there then your best bet is going to be an Xmodem . Find a very small IP only image to load on the box just to get it up and running , once it is up you can copy a new image in via tftp see this link for xmodem procedure

Hhmmmm,

Is there anyone that has any ideas on how I use xmodem, and where can I download it from? I've searched the cd and can't find it.

You use it with hyperterm the URL I pasted in earlier gives you step by step instructoiuns

Oh, Sorry!
