New switch setup

Hi

I just turned on a new switch and went through with the management setup. Once completed I got a message on the console saying vlan1 shutdown. Could someone please tell me why vlan 1 is shutdown, and whether I should enable it or not?

Hi Dan,

The new switches come default with VLAN 1 and it is in shutdown state.

If it is a pure layer 2 switch like 2960 or 2960 you can "no shut" vlan 1 and assign an ip address to this vlan so that you can manage the switch remotely.

Not only vlan 1 if you want you can create some other vlan also in vlan database and create a a layer 3 interface for the same and assign an ip address and make it no shut.

On layer 2 switches one layer 3 interface can be in up and up state to manage the switch remotely or else you need to console into the switch for everything.

All switchports must be members of a VLAN, and, by default, it is VLAN 1. Because VLAN 1 was selected as the default VLAN for all switchports, it was also chosen to handle special traffic such as VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) advertisements, CDP, Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP), or Link Aggregation Control Protocol messages (LACP). By default, in-band management interfaces such as sc0 are members of VLAN 1.

Also, interface vlan 1 is shutdown , and its used so you can add an IP to the switch and access it for management.

hi DAN,

yes you can make it enable by no shut...and vlan 1 is the default VLAN and all ports are the members of the same VLAN ...on layer 2 switch you can assign IP address for the management like for telnet.
