New WAN Connection - Urgent

I need to set up a new network to connect a IGB WAN link between 2 Cisco Switches - Cisco 6509 and Cisco 3550.

Please how do I go about doing this?. I know how to do it between router to router but not switch to Switch.

The Cisco 6509 is an existing Catalyst with MSFC and the Cisco 3550 is a WS-C3550-48-EMI.

Over WAN, it all depends what sort of interfaces you have on switches. If you have GE or Ethernet ports this can be done.

1. you can have Ethernet ports provided by SONET ADMs on both sides of your network.

2. you can simply use a dedicated fiber for GE/Ethernet connectivity. It all depends on distance and db values.

This has already been set up and running but no data is passing across. We have data passing across a 100MB line but have since acquired a 1GB link and this is up and running but from Switch to Switch.

I want to bring down the 100MB interface and switch over to the 1GB interface.

What I am asking is how to I cobfigure tis new line. Is there a Cisco Web Page that can help me through configuring the 1GB interface on the Switch to pass data through.

The Line is a Fibre interface.

I would think you wouldn't need to do anything if everything is Layer 2 between the switches and the Gigabit link is already up and running. It should just work. There really isn't a lot to configure.

Spanning tree may be blocking the new link. Dont know if adding a new better path should make it block the old link (100mb) and unblock the new one (1000mb).

Do a sho spanning tree on each switch and see if one has its gig interface blocked.

Yep...that's true. I didn't think he had both connections connected at the same time between both switches.

I failed to say that the 100 and 1GB line are not on the same device.

The 100MB line is connected via routers but the 1GB line is now connected via switches.

So we used to have

Network<>Switch<>Router<>100MB Line<>Router<>Switch<>Network

Now we want to have

Network<>Switch<>1GB Line<>Switch<>Network.

What are the subnets on both sides of the Gigabit link? If you previously had a router between the two networks, they networks probably were on different IP subnets. Now that there is no router between the networks, the network is flat. What are the subnets of the networks? Do you have access to the switches? What does show int gigabitX show on both switches?

on the C6509

I have put the GB into VLAN 200 but the vlan to be used is vlan 8 as that is where the router was connected to

On the 3550,

There is VLAN 1 and vlan 10 where the connection from the router is.

SO if i put the line in VLAN 8 on the 6509 and put the line in vlan 10 on the 3550. Will this work?

DOing a spantree on the 6509 showed port state as forwarding and doing a spantree on the 3550 also showed it as FWD.

I have access to both switches.

Can you post configurations of both switches (Delete sensitive information like passwords & puplic addresses etc.). Will be much easier if we can see the configs (routing as well please)

If the networks on both ends differ you will have to configure your switches to do the routing instead. or you can trunk the 3550 VLAN's and let the 6500 switch do the intervlan routing. Alternatively you can connect a external router as per you original design and let it do the routing.
