Newbie needs help ...

Hello,

I’m a newbie to Cisco world and I’m having some little problems...

I start work in a company that as deployed some Cisco routers and switches, but in the switch case they didn’t assign any ip address to them. How can I remotely assign ip address to all of the switches deployed, can I do the same to 3com manageable hub’s also deployed in this manner?

In one branch office, I have 1 router 3 switches no hubs, and I’m having trouble with the printers obtaining ip address from a Windows NT server, the other computers work just fine, how can debug this ?

Thanks and forgive my English …

Re: Newbie needs help ...

send a roll cable, have someone plug it (one at a time, when you tell them) from the routers AUX port

to each switches CONSOLE port.. you will need the following in your router (to reverse telnet from the router, out the AUX port to the console port of the switches)

- goes in router config

line aux 0

no exec

no activation-character

terminal-type VT100

transport preferred none

transport input all

stopbits 1

flowcontrol hardware

now do a show line.. the line plus 2000 will be your line number for reverse telnet

CISCO_2610_1>sh line

Tty Typ Tx/Rx A Modem Roty AccO AccI Uses Noise Overruns Int

0 CTY - - - - - 0 0 0/0 -

65 AUX 9600/9600 - - - - - 0 0 0/0 -

* 66 VTY - - - - 102 105 0 0/0 -

67 VTY - - - - 102 7 0 0/0 -

68 VTY - - - - 102 0 0 0/0 -

69 VTY - - - - 102 0 0 0/0 -

70 VTY - - - - 102 0 0 0/0 -

Line(s) not in async mode -or- with no hardware support:

1-64

if AUX is port 65 it will become 2065 so telnet

from the routers loopback address (you can set a

private one like 1.1.1.1 for this)

telnet 1.1.1.1 2065

now the router will want a password for AUX (its cisco by default)

and hit enter and you will see the switches CONSOLE port stuff and may configure management IP's on the Switches..
