Newbie Question

I have a 3350 switch. I want to configure it so I can connect to it via a telnet session. The switch is currently running on the network and serving all hosts.

Can I just plug into the console port and execute a terminal session or do I need to power down the switch before I try to physically connect to it. Basically, I do not want to cause any disturbance to the network.

Re: Newbie Question

Plug right in. Use the Cisco light blue rollover cable that should have been provided with the switch. Hyperterminal (or other similar app) settings should be 9600 8 None 1

Hope this helps

Re: Newbie Question

What Steve describes is connecting to the switch via a console session. You'll need to access the switch via the console port as he described in order to configure the switch for telnet access.

Additionally, if you want to connect to it remotely via telnet, you'll have to configure an with an IP address that is reachable from your workstation.

The following documents should help you set this up.

Assigning the Switch IP Address and Default Gateway

Using the command line interface

Additionally, you'll need to configure a password in order to telnet to the switch, which is covered here:

Configuring Switch-Based Authentication

Re: Newbie Question

It seems like there is a password for priviledged mode. I tried every combination of password possible and I cant get in the switch.

enable 0 brings me to switch>

enable 15 prompts for password that cannot get.

1-14 are not set.

Anyone have a clue on how I can reset EXEC password ?

Re: Newbie Question

Here is a link for that. It will require a reboot on your router and cause downtime.
