Newby Question: 6509 logging and SNMP

I have a 6509 with dual SUP2s. Should I enable logging and SNMP in CATOS and the two MSFC routers?

Thanks,

Patrick Brown

Re: Newby Question: 6509 logging and SNMP

Its much better to log the entries in a dedicated syslog server, because, sometimes, these syslog message can shoot the CPU usage to a higher level. Or you can use buffered logging, where you log the entries to a buffer in memory, and you can later view it. You can even control/limit the number of blocks/ lines logged in the buffer. I would recommend using syslog server.

How to enable SNMP on catalyst

set snmp community read-only XXXX

set snmp community read-write YYYY

On the MSFC - its just like routers.

snmp-server community public RO

snmp-server community private RW

Once this is done, you can poll, using SNMP softwares, to pull out SNMP information. Its better to restrict the hosts from which SNMP poll can be done, using access-lists.

How to configure Logging on the switch,
