OSPF Area 0 - Do you have to ALWAYS have one?

I'm having a conversation with a co-worker over whether a stand alone network with only one OSPF area needed MUST use area 0 or not. Can anyone point me to a place that will address this question for us?

You do not need to always have area zero.

Any area, say 10.1.1.0, can be a stand-alone OSPF area and serve the purpose. You need area-zero only to consolidate multiple areas into one AS. If you have two or more areas in the same AS, one of them must be area-0.

Thanks.
