ospf process id

What is the relevance of ospf process id.?Or is there any

standard procedure in allocating process ids?

Thanks in advance..

Re: ospf process id

The OSPF process id is used to identify this router in its communication with its neighboring routers. The most important thing about it is that it should not change.

Originally, if no loopback address was specified in the router, the highest TCP address would be used. This would cause problems if this interface went down, so using a loopback address was recommended. Recently however, the router-id command was introduced to allow you to specify exactly what address to use.

Re: ospf process id

ospf process id is a numeric value local to the router. It does NOT have to match process id's on other routers.

It is possible to run multiple ospf processes on the same router but is not recommended as it creates multiple database instance that add extra overhead to the router.
