If i have two ABRs (call them abr_rtr1 and abr_rtr2) configured in ospf area 0 and area 1, with no physical connection between the ABRs, can i manipulate the routing table on abr_rtr1 so that i can trace from abr_rtr1 through area 0 and into area 1 via abr_rtr2? I have tried adjusting ospf cost of abr_rtr1 but the trace continues to go directly into area 1 despite the cost.
According to RFC, the order of preference for OSPF routes are as follows:
1. intra-area routes, O
2. inter-area routes O IA
3. external routes type 1, O E1
4. external routes type 2, O E2
If you are only interested in tracing, try using the extended traceroute command and set the source as the area0 interface. Other options are policy routing (ip local policy), bandwidth command, or static route (depending on what you are trying to do exactly).
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
