P-bit manipulation

Hi, is there any way to manipulate the P-bit which is used for conversion from LSA Type 7 to Type 5's on ASBR's. Just curious and not sure in what scenario it would be used so if someone could give an example of when would this be needed if ever that would be great. Thanks

Re: P-bit manipulation

You can manipulate the P-bit. You can give this command "area 1 nssa translate type7" on NSSA ASBR or NSSA ABR for the conversion.

For eg, assuming this setup

RIP networks --> NSSA ASBR --> NSSA ABR --> Backbone area --> Internet

In this scenario, let us assume that RIP network also yours. Then, we need to achieve two things...

1. All other routers in your OSPF domain need to know how to reach your RIP networks.

2. For NSSA to connect to Internet, the only default way is to go through NSSA ABR, so there is no need for external, summary lsas.

First is achieved through translation and second is achieved through NSSA. Hope you cleared about this example.

Re: P-bit manipulation

Hi Carenas,

Thanks for your reply. Just one more question. Isn't the NSSA ASBR doing the conversion so wouldn't this command work only on the ASBR? Thanks
