Pause input

I have a 3548 switch with a copper UTP gigabit interface (p/n WS-G5483). The gigabit interface is connected to a file server running data backups. When do data backups I get an imcrementing number for "pause input" when I do a

"show interface gigabit0/1" command. What is "pause input" and do I have a cause for concern?

The pause counters are for IEEE 802.3X flow control on GB ports.

The page http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat2950/1219ea1/scg/swint.htm has some useful information about flow control.

Definitions:

pause input - Number of PAUSE (XOFF) packets received.

packets output - Total number of messages transmitted by the interface.

It does indicate that you are seeing congestion on that link.
