Please help with MVR (Multicast VLAN Registration)

We would appreciate any help regarding the use of MVR.

We would like to use MVR to clone clients using Symantec Ghost

clonning software. We would like that only the subsciber receiver

ports on a switch receive the multicast packets from GhostCast

server.

We setup a test with only a multicast source and a receiver on a 2950.

The global MVR is set as follows:

MVR Running: TRUE

MVR multicast VLAN: 505

MVR Max Multicast Groups: 256

MVR Current multicast groups: 1

MVR Global query response time: 10 (tenths of sec)

MVR Mode: dynamic

We set up the source multicast port on VLAN 505 as follows :

switchport access vlan 505

no ip address

mvr type source

mvr vlan 505 group 224.77.44.72

The multcast group is set up to 224.77.44.72 (the Symantec GhostCast server uses the range 224.77.2.0 - 224.77.255.155)

We setup a receiver multicast port on VLAN 501 as follows :

switchport access vlan 501

no ip address

mvr type receiver

mvr vlan 505 group 224.77.44.72

We setup IGMP snooping on both VLAN's as follows :

IGMP snooping is globally enabled

IGMP snooping is enabled on this Vlan

IGMP snooping immediate-leave is disabled on this Vlan

IGMP snooping mrouter learn mode is pim-dvmrp on this Vlan

IGMP snooping is running in IGMP_ONLY mode on this Vlan

show mvr members gives :

224.77.44.72 ACTIVE Fa0/10(s), Fa0/28(s)

(we set up port 28 as source and 10 as receiver).

However the GhostCast server (on the multicast source port

on VLAN 505) does not connect to the receiver client (on the

receiver port on VLAN 501).

A GhostCast session include multicast and unicast packets I think.

I do not know if that may be a problem. We tried to put the multicast

source port on the same VLAN as the receiver port (501 in our case -

although the documentation on MVR mentiones the source port should

be on multicast VLAN and receiver ports on a different VLAN).

We left the multicast VLAN set up to 505. The client and server

establish communication but clonning (mulicasting) does not occur.

We would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Re: Please help with MVR (Multicast VLAN Registration)

Refer to this link for sample configuration:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008007e8d9.html#xtocid16

Also,

MVR Running: TRUE

MVR multicast VLAN: 505

MVR Max Multicast Groups: 256

MVR Current multicast groups: 1

MVR Global query response time: 10 (tenths of sec)

MVR Mode: dynamic

- In your global config you are missing the following command:

"Switch(config)# mvr group 224.77.44.72"

Also, "MVR multicast VLAN: 505" should be:

"MVR multicast VLAN: 501" (i.e the receiver VLAN ot the server Vlan)
