possibility of 802.1q trunking in cisco 1900 series switches.

Hi,

Is there any possibility to create 802.1q trunk in cisco 1900 series switches such as by upgrading to the latest version software etc., I am having 1900 series switch with 9.00.06 ver software and a cisco 2950 switch. 1900 supports only ISL whereas 2950 supports only 802.1q. I am in a situation to configure a trunk between these switches. will it be possible. if yes, then how.

Thanks in advance.

Re: possibility of 802.1q trunking in cisco 1900 series switches

Hello,

the Catalyst 1900 runs two versions of images, namely the Standard and Enterprise editions. Trunking is only supported on the Enterprise images, and it only supports ISL encapsulation and does not support 802.1q. This limits the capability of the Catalyst 1900 to form a trunk with other Catalyst switches that can support ISL trunking. Check out this document for additional info:

Thanks for your information.

shall I confirm that there is no possibility of connecting cisco 1900 and cisco 2950 switch by trunking( of any type even with any software version on both sides ).

Hello Abdul,

you can build an ISL trunk between a 1900 and the 2950, as long as you run the Enterprise Edition software on the 1900. Remember that on the 1900, trunking can only be configured on the two x 100 Mbps uplink ports, which are usually the last two ports on the switch normally marked Ax and Bx.

Re: possibility of 802.1q trunking in cisco 1900 series switches

Hello GP,

I have tried to establish the link between cisco 1900 and cisco 2950. since the 2950 supports only 802.1q trunking, i am unable to connect to 1900 switch from 2950 switch. I am running enterprise edition image in cisco 1900 switch. I think that the trunking interoperability problem might be the cause. suggestions please.

Thanks in advance.

Re: possibility of 802.1q trunking in cisco 1900 series switches

2950 supports only 802.1Q, 1900 supports only ISL, no chance for trunking. Instead of extending VLANs between these switches you can gather them on a router with two fastethernet interfaces and supporting both 802.1Q and ISL. Or as a last resort solution for extending VLANs between these you can patch additional cables for each VLAN (for each VLAN that you want to trunk you can connect a cable between two access ports on these switchs). Regards.
