PPP sessions

Hello all;

I need to know how many PPP sessions can be terminated on a cisco 7507?

Also how many L2TP tunnels can it handles?

Thanks in advance.

Re: PPP sessions

There will be variables that will dictate performance; for example, packet size, features enabled (fragmentation, interleaving, etc) if using MPPP. Also, when really stressing out the box there may be a need to tune the buffers.

I don't have specific info for the 7500; I do have some for the 7200, both test data and real data from a customer (which is a bit dated).

The customer had a 7206VXR, NPE-300, 12.0(5)T1 with 14 L2F tunnels and 780 sessions, CPU at 26%.

The test data showed a 7200/NPE-400 with OC3 line rate with 8,000 PPP sessions and 1,000 L2TP tunnels, 512MB of RAM and 12.1(5)T.

Note that there is little difference between a tunnel and a session, in terms of performance (about 32K of memory per session). 2,000 tunnels of one session each or one tunnel with 2,000 sessions consumes roughly the same resources.

sessions in it consumes roughly the same resources.
