Is there any advantages of using this on my serial lines ? and why would I need it ?

The default encapsulation on a serail link is HDLC. You would need to configure ppp if you wanted to connect to a router from another vendor that doesn't support HDLC or if you wanted to authenticate the link establishement. The latter is usually not a requirement unless the serial link is used for dialup.
Hope this helps,

Hi
The main thing i can think off is authentication which you can have it with PPP.
Also if you are going on for bundling multiple E1s you can make use of PPP as encapsulation and bundle them under multilink..
Also if you are interfacing a cisco router with some other vendor device then you need to make use of PPP as encapsulation.
