PPPoE and keepalives

I have connected an external dsl-modem to a cisco 1721 router.Normally, cisco routers use the interfaces keepalives to detect wheather the line protocol is up or down. On normal ppp links the LCP CONFIGURE REQUESTS are used as keepalives.

Now we are talking about PPPoE.

- Therefore, the Ethernet Loopback packets are used as keepalives, because we are talking about an ethernet interface?

- Therefore, the line protocol on the ethernet interface stays up although the ppp connection is down?

- Therefore, we cannot use floating static and backup interface?

- Therefore, we have to use a layer 3 backup scheme?

That is what I have learned from previous conversations. So we have to use dialer watch. But do we need a dynamic routing protocol as well, or is it possible to trigger on the IP address of the remote site (which is provided by ppp and could be found as a /32 in the routing table)???

A working configuration might be helpful : -)

Thanks in advance

Edgar

Dialer watch should allow you to set up redundancy in case your dsl connection goes down. Here is a link that explains how dialer watch works:
