Printers down but desktops working - Cisco Catalyst 3750

Hi All,

I am having a problem on a LAN that I am managaing. We have multiple

switches in a building which has desktops and printers connected to

it. All the desktops are working fine but the ports which connect

printers show "noconnect". The speed and duplex for all ports that

show noconnect are auto. I have tried to hard code the speed and

duplex values thinking that it might be an auto negotiation issue, but

still nothing changes. I am not sure why this might be happening.

Have any of you seen such a problem before? I would appreciate any

help or leads on how I can solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Hello,

noconnect means there is not even Layer 2 connectivity. What printers do you have ? I know that e.g. with HP JetDirect printers you can configure the network card just like a regular PC...

Re: Printers down but desktops working - Cisco Catalyst 3750

Hi,

The printer that we have is a HP LaserJet 8100. There are a number of other printers, but at this moment I am not sure which brand. I could not print to these other ones also until yesterday but today after doing clear arp I am able to ping them (There are entries in the ARP table). However, the arp entry for the HP LaserJet shows incomplete (MAC column) for sometime after doing a clear arp and then vanishes. Hence I am still not being able to ping the HP LaserJet printer. Do you think this is an auto-negotiation issue?

If not, what might it be?

Thanks for your time and help.

I think the problem may not be switch at all. Check and double check the printer IP configuration [subnet mask etc.]. Problem may reside at layer 3.

Re: Printers down but desktops working - Cisco Catalyst 3750

I have been monitoring the behavior of these printers over the past

few days including the weekend. It was working fine on Sunday evening

and till five minutes back (Its 8:24 AM, Monday morning right now) I

could ping all the printers. Now suddenly, it all seems dead. I cannot

ping at these printers. I am guessing that it is happening because of

some node on the network or else why would it work during off-hours.

Anybody got a clue as to why this can happen? Thanks for your help.

Re: Printers down but desktops working - Cisco Catalyst 3750

I have the same problem with a 3500 xl switch !!!!

it appears that when the MAC entry ages out the printer drops off the network

strangely it doesn't happen on a 2950 unit ???

we have NOT been able to resolve the problem and fitted a 2950 to overcome the problem

if you unplug the cable on the printer and plug it back in it works, it definitely NOT negotiate problem

it also seems to happen on Kyocera Printers.

I suggest trying a TAC call and send me the fix if you get one

I would suggest trying to upgrade to a newer version of IOS.

In the intermin trying uppping the arp timeout on the ports the printers are attached to.

Like if the printer was attached to FastEthernet0/1

config t

int fa0/1

arp timeout 2147483
