What would happen if I used say 172.1.0.0/16 on my network which is not a private address ? what probs would this cause ?

you can use this ip address only for you testing or only for your internal LAN which is not connected with the internet...otherwise it give the ip address conflict...

You probably will not see the conflict directly, but if your users ever wanted to access a host on the internet that happens to be in the 172.1.0.0/16, then they would not be able to do so.

You can use any address range inside your network that you want, but you will have to nat if you want your network to talk to the internet.
