Private VLANS and VLAN ACLs

Hi,

I am trying to understand the basic difference between Private VLANS and VLAN ACLs. To me it appears that you can achieve basic security using VLAN ACLs to control traffic within the VLAN.

In what circumstances Private VLANs would be necassary\better ?

What are the advantages of using these over VLAN ACLs ?

Re: Private VLANS and VLAN ACLs

Here's a link that discusses how PVLANs and VACLs can be used together: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a008013565f.shtml

I agree that both features can be used to accomplish essentially the same goals. To me, PVLANs seem like a somewhat cleaner way of doing things, especially as the network scales (VACLs could end up getting pretty lengthy depending on the traffic flow requirements). For the most part, I suppose it's a matter of personal preference.
