Problem reloading 2501 router after erasing startup config

Our Networking Academy has received a "new" 2501 router. When a student erases starup config and then does a reload the router displays the following messages:

Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/network-confg (Timed out)

Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/cisconet.cfg (Timed out)

Setup:new interface ethernet 0 placed in "shutdown" state

Setup:new interface serial 0 placed in "shutdown" state

Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/ciscortr.cfg (Timed out)

Eventually the router prompt will appear but the router does not go into the System Configuration Dialog. The student can enter the configuration information, save it, and reload the router and the router works fine. The tftp errors only occur when the startup config is erased.

2500 software (C2500-D-L) Ver 12.0(14)

Image file is "flash:c2500-d-l.120-14"

Configuration register is 0x2102

3000 Bootstrap software (IGS-Boot_R) ver 11.0(10c)

It would speed up the reload if we could get rid of the tftp errors and didn't have to wait for the router to decided that it couldn't find the tftp server. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Problem reloading 2501 router after erasing startup config

June,

The reason the router does this is because that is what its configuration registry tells it to do by default, it is looking to boot from a tftp server if an ios is not present. The following link should solve this:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps233/products_tech_note09186a008009464c.shtml#config_reg_value

I hope this helps.

Try the following after the router boots up

Router>enable

Router#configure terminal

Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

Router(config)#no service config

Router(config)#end

Router#wr mem

We entered the commands suggested, then erased startup config, and did a reload. Still looking for the tftp server. This only happens when the startup config is erased. Any other ideas?
