problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

These are the logs we are getting on a C6509 connected with a 3524:

2003 Mar 27 17:04:26 EET +02:00 %CDP-4-NVLANMISMATCH:Native vlan mismatch detected on port 3/25

2003 Mar 27 17:34:26 EET +02:00 %CDP-4-NVLANMISMATCH:Native vlan mismatch detected on port 3/25

2003 Mar 27 19:04:28 EET +02:00 %CDP-4-NVLANMISMATCH:Native vlan mismatch detected on port 3/25

But we don't have any trunking configured on both sides!!!

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

I think it is a VLAN mismatch and NOT a Native VLAN mismatch. Port 3/25 of sw-core-ath-02 was configured for VLAN 90 while Fa0/11 of sw-dial-ath-01 was configured for VLAN 9. If this is the case, I guess it was because of a typo error.

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

I know these are different vlans.

But that souldn't be a problem because the switches aren't trunked.

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Hi,

it seems like you have a port in VLAN90 on one side and in VLAN9 on the other side.

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Since both switches belong to different VTP domains, that shouldn't be a problem.

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

What's the problem then?

If you want to stop receiving error messages

set logging level cdp 3 default

in your C6509 config and everybody's happy.

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

This way i simply ignore the error. But what i'm trying to do is to solve it.

Or is it a bug?

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Error Message Decoder

1. %CDP-4-NVLANMISMATCH: Native vlan mismatch detected on port [dec]/[dec]

This message indicates that the native VLAN is different from the one set on at least one of the neighboring ports. [dec]/[dec] is the module number/port number of the mismatched port.

Recommended Action: Check the native VLAN settings. If the VLAN configuration does not match, set it appropriately. If no apparent mismatch is found, contact your technical support representative.

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

It is not a bug.

The switch is getting an info from the other side via CDP that the other switch has the line assigned to another VLAN.

This is a "suspicious" situation. So a warning (level 4 severity) is sent to syslog.

If you want to design your network this way - you can and there is nothing to fix.

But you will be still getting this messages to the syslog unless you ignore them via config setting I described before.

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Another 3524 with 120-5.3.WC.1 and the same config, doesn't cause such a problem.

Maybe something has changed in ios?

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Is it connected to the same C6509?

And do you see a native VLAN mismatch using sh cdp nei?

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Hi

I'm dealing with similar problem . I thought it might be helpful to you guyes.

The network is as follows

gig0/2 8/10 4/15 gig0/2

3500xl-1-------------------------6509-------------------3500xl-2

vlan1 vlan102 vlan125 vlan1

Same cat6509 is connected to two 3500xl switches. Ports on 6509 are in vlan 102 and vlan 125 and ports on both cat3500 are in vlan1. i'm getting following error for port 4/15

GMT+00:00","CDP","4","NVLANMISMATCH","Native vlan mismatch detected on port 4/15","*"

Both 3500xls are having similar config and only difference is in the software. The switch running 12.0(5)WC3b is having problem and switch running 12.0(5.3)wc(1) is not reporting anything.

In my opinion its down to software. Will let you know about the result once we manage to upgrade 3500xl-2 to 12.0(5.3)wc(1)

Atul

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Hi,

I can't beleive this should be an IOS version problem. Actually it's the 6509 reporting the message.

Are you sure both 3500XLs are running CDP ver 2?

What do you see when issuing sh cdp nei det on 6509?

Do you see the native VLAN info for both 3500s?

MIlan

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

hi

Please check the 'sh cdp nei det ' from cat6509 . I get native vlan info on 4/15 but nothing for 8/10. let me have ypur thoughts.

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Seems like the switch connected to 8/10 is not sending CDP ver 2.

Go to it's console and try

sh cdp

The output should like:

Global CDP information:

Sending CDP packets every 60 seconds

Sending a holdtime value of 180 seconds

Sending CDPv2 advertisements is enabled

If CDPv2 is not enabled you don't get the native VLAN info.

Hi

All three switches send CDP V2 . Please see below

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Hi,

I think I've found the bug descriptions on CCO.

See bugs CSCdt90642 (Cat3500 not sending native VLAN info in CDP v2)and CSCdw38221 (explaining that CDP-4-NATIVE_VLAN_MISMATCH error is an expected behaviour).

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Hi Milan,

I can confirm that downgrading the software to 12.0(5.3)wc(1) has resolved the issue. Many thanks for your input on this.

Atul

Re: problem with "non-trunking" switch configuration

Hi Atul,

but 12.0(5.3)wc(1) is the version containing the bug - CDP v2 not sending native VLAN info.

So downgrade is some kind of workaround - error messages are not sent anymore - but if you upgrade in the future you'll get the messages again.

Regards,

Milan
