Problems booting IOS 12.2.12a on 2502

Hello!

I have encountered issues coercing a 2502 to boot IOS 12.2.12a (IP Plus) by tftp. The image is downloaded successfully from the tftp server, however, the router crashes shortly thereafter. IOS 12.1(17) IP only loads without a problem.

Requirements for this release are 16F/10D. This box has 16MB of DRAM and no flash - boots soley from tftp. The boot ROMs appear to be stock as well. An acquaintance suggested that 12.2 requires new boot ROMs in order to work. Can anyone validate this?

Also, I have a 2513 with no fixed DRAM installed. sh ver reports primary/shared memory as 14336K/2048K. 8MB flash on this one. What is the likelihood of 12.2 running on this box?

It seems that the image that is being loaded is IP/IPX/AT/DEC/FW PLUS and NOT IP Plus.

Please download the IP Plu image only and try loading it up. The filename that the IP Plus image has is c2500-is-l.122-12a.bin and its requirement meets what the router has.

The 2513 should be ok as well.

Egad, typo! You're right, it was not the IP Plus image, rather IP/IPX/AT/DEC/FW PLUS. Nevertheless, the IP only image c2500-i-l.122-12a.bin loads successfully, which, according to the documentation, requires 16F/10D - the same as c2500-dos-l.122-12a.bin.

Out of morbid curiosity I tried a couple of Enterprise images that require 16F/16D, the router faled to boot them as well.

So...

Will adding flash and/or new boot ROMs provide the necessary memory conservation to make these images bootable or am I out of luck with this series of router?

I am working toward my CCNA and am using the Cisco Press books as a guide until I feel I am ready to enter a Cisco Academy (in other words, I want to have completed the course before begin =). Of particular note was the statement in the books that the 640-607 exam is based on 12.2.

Would you suggest that 12.0.24 IP/IPX/AT/DEC/FW PLUS (16F/8D) is semantically similar enough to 12.2 to be useful on the exam? No problems booting that image at all.

I may be going off the deep end with this, but it's a significant investment in time and energy, I want to make sure I'm doing it right!

You could take it to the 12.1 IP Plus. Seems like the 12.2 memory requirements are higher than what it is mentioned. 12.1 should be enough to deal with your requirements.
