Questions on VMPS

We would like to use VMPS to create hose-based VLANs.

Our network is build on a Cat6509, Cat3500 and Cat3550 type switches.

As far as I can find only a Cat5000 is able to act as a VMPS server.

Questions;

Can a Cat6500 act as a VMPS server?

Is there software available so we can install a VMPS server on a system instead of on a switch?

T.i.a. for your respons,

Carlo.

As far as I know, all fairly recent CatOS versions support VMPS Server functionality. IOS doesn't support this yet (to my knowledge), but CatOS has for a while. I don't know what the first version of CatOS that supports this is, but it goes at least as far back as 6.3: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008007fb1d.html

Carlo:

6000 and 6500 series switches will work as VMPS servers (I'm running a 6509 as vmps server).

I'd guess that the core functionality of vmps HAS to run on a switch since it's a function of mac address to vlan mapping. Unless some alpha Geek has written code to pull CAM contents into 3rd party software and do the dynamic MAC-to-vlan mapping and then push it back into the CAM..

Rich,

I found software at http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmps

But I prefer to use the cisco servers.

We are running CatOS 5.5(17)on a 6509 with supervisor1 and MSFC1 and it seems only to support vmps client.

Is this CatOS version related?

What version are you running?

Look into the Cisco URT solution...

Much more versatile, but at a cost.

URT won't work for us because we are using a lot of network attached devices without authentication i.e. netcams and measurement equipment.

I'll see if we can upgrade our CatOS.

Thanks to all for your contribution.

Kind regards,

Carlo.
