I'm currently researching ways to establish redundant connections between a 7513 and multiple HP switches operating in a switch mesh. My first thought was to use hsrp on two Fast E interfaces on the one router, but further reading has shown me that isn't the solution. What technology/option should I be researching to make sure that a single switch failure will not separate the router from the switch mesh lan?
I wonder if you can achieve total redundancy without two routers. I'm not a LAN expert by any means. I think STP allows for full redundancy within the mesh, but without two separate routers, you still have that one single point of failure (the switch that interfaces to the router and the link between the two). I don't know what good your other ethernet interface would be. I'm fairly certain that you can't define two ethernet interfaces on the same router in the same subnet.
I realize that I still have a single point of failure, but, I have atleast eliminated a switch as a single point of failure, giving me a bit more reliability. The current plan is to setup a redundant router in a new space, and start mirroring services over there, and use hsrp between the two. That should eliminate all single points of failure, till then I'm trying to do what I can with what I've got.
Excellent idea. By "mixed success" are you eluding to what would presumably be an arp cache problem on the hosts attached to the network? I would think that they would have to time out the original MAC of the router. Or is there a mechanism to do this quickly and automatically that I am forgetting?
You would have that problem if the MAC address remains unchanged.
"mixed success" was more in references to how the switches react when the backup comes online but has the same MAC address as the primary. Some switches are good with it, some take a little time to converge. In either case, this option only works when the primary interface of the router goes up/down or down/down.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does

Attached policy provides CLI access to the Cisco 4G router over text messaging. Two files are in the attached .tar file:
