Redundant Sup 1A causing problems

Folks,

We should ordered a second sup for our Catalyst 6500. CCO doc. says that as soon as I plug the second sup in the chassis the primary chassis should duplicate the Code image ( Catos) and configuration file to the secondary sup.

It did not happen in my case, i kept getting sync errors.

Anyways i manually copied the code and the configuration file to the flash of the second sup, what else should i do for the redundancy to work, i configured high availability on the switch as well???

Thanks,

Re: Redundant Sup 1A causing problems

Did you had High avialablity versioning enable on you active sup. If yes then while you have versioning enable it doesnot copy the code to the the standby sup.

Do a show high-availabuility on your system and it will show you if versioning is enable.

If you have that enable do " set high-availability versioning disable " and it will copy the code to your second sup.

Re: Redundant Sup 1A causing problems

amit,

Thanks for the response. High availability was turned off when i put the secondary sup inside the chassis. I am using external flash by the way for code and configuration file, It did give an error about syncing something.

The i turned on high availability without the versioning feature, but got the same results.

Is it because i am using external flash to store all this information.

Also the prepend option does not show up in the config ether, how would the seconday sup know what file to boot from when it comes online??

Re: Redundant Sup 1A causing problems

Paresh,

It will not sync the image files which are in PCMCIA slot i.e file on external flash. That's why your flash didnot synchronize.

Now there are 2 types of image syncronization on the Supervisors, it will never show you with prepend keyword.

1. Image name preceded by RT_SYNC on standby sup i.e runtime sync which means that you have an active sup running on the box and you inserted another one and that's the run time sync.

2. Image name preceded by BT_SYNC on standby sup i.e Boottime sync which means that you have an active sup and standby sup running on the box and you have upgraded the OS on the active one and it synchronize its flash code with the standby one.

These image codes will only be see on the standby sup after the code sync.

Amit,

Here is the output from my 6500. Can you please tell me why the Code did not syncronize on my bootflashes???? Also what should i do since my running code and configuration file is on external flash now to make sure that the seconday boot correctly when the primary goes down.

Re: Redundant Sup 1A causing problems

Paresh,

Please paste a show mod / show version from your switch. I think you want to upgrade to 7.6.1. Which one is ur active sup ? is it the one with 7.6.1 code.. if yes then it will not sync teh code to the other one as the other sup doesnot have enough spance n bootflash to accomodate the new cat OS. so this is related to flash memeory problem. Check the difference in memory space on both the sup's flash. If you dont have enough space it will not sync the bootflashes. And again the images on Slot0 will not be synchronize.

I manually pasted the code to flash slot0 of redundant sup. how can i copy the running congiguration to the redundant sup???? do you know what is the file naming convetion?

Re: Redundant Sup 1A causing problems

Can i erase the bootflash of the seconday sup?? what is the command?

Re: Redundant Sup 1A causing problems

You can erase the image on secondry sup using the command

delete 2/image_name

squeeze 2/bootflash:

You can also format the bootflash using the format command.

By default, the active sup synchronizes the config with standby sup. So it must be having the config. If you want to take a back up or want to manually copy the config use the follwing comamnd :

copy config slot0:

copy config bootflash:, normally we use .cfg format.

ex. switch.cfg
