Remotely get hardware serial number?

Is there any way to get a router serial number remotely? In our lab, when i do a "sh hardware" i get the mainboard serial. I am trying to get the unit serial (the number on the back) without having to call the sites and have a user get into our racks. Is the unit serial kept in software anywhere?

Unfortunately there is not a way for you to get the serial number from the IOS. You will have to either physically read the number off the back yourself or have someone read it to you.
