Removing VLAN 1

The new IOS allows you to remove VLAN 1 from Trunking Ports.

My question is

The protocols such as ISL/8021.Q, PAGP/LACP, and VTP uses VLAN1, So

Will it be a problem if I remove VLAN 1 from my trunking ports since it is not used in my design at all, and shut down completely.

Re: Removing VLAN 1

Yes,

but Cisco proprietary control protocols (CDP, VTP, CMP, etc.) will remian using VLAN1.

Disabling VLAN1 on a trunk means disabling it for user data and STP only.

But you can't remove it completely, control protocols will remain anyway.

BTW, be carefull, I noticed some IOS bugs in the past (Cat3550 not sending CDP, e.g.) causing problems while VLAN1 disabled.

You can also get into STP troubles while interconnecting with other vendor switches (search "common spanning tree" for details).

See "VLAN 1" section of http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/473/103.pdf for details.

Milan

I don't think there will be any problem. You can create any other VLAN and configure for management purpose.

Thanx
