what is the ip route cache cef command used for, I thought it was either ip router cache or cef, also do any of them use the processor ?

AFAIK its used only to reenable the CEF support on the interface in which its already disabled or not to use CEF.

We normally have in CEF enabled in global mode in all the routers by default these days and if you want to have something specific you can use up this and enable on the interfaces.

In some instances, you might want to disable CEF on a particular interface because that interface is configured with a feature that CEF does not support. Because all interfaces that support CEF are enabled by default when you enable CEF operation globally, you must use the no form of the ip route-cache cef command in the interface configuration mode to turn CEF operation off a particular interface.

" ip route cache cef command " enables Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) operation on an interface.

Ip route cache is the default command on the interface whihc enables fast switch on the interface per destination. You give IP cef to enable it gloablly.
