I am still very new to this.
Why when I set up a very basic program can I ping the ethernet side but not the serial side? Program set up via the router first power up.

well,
do u have IP configured on serial Interface .
Could you pls run " sh ip int brief" and send me the output .

Is the serial interface 'up'? If it is not up, it will not respont to a ping.

I assgned it an IP. Can I test to make sure it is up?

physical shoul dbe up and line protocol should be up ....

Serial is up and Ether is up. Still can't ping

From where are you trying to ping? If you are on a workstation on the Ethernet it works to ping the Ethernet because the router Ethernet and the workstation are on the same subnet (I hope). The workstation will need a default gateway to ping anything off the local subnet (the serial port). Am I correct in the assumption that you are at a workstation on the Ethernet? If so, check the default gateway setting of the workstation. It should be the address of the Ethernet.
