How many routes are we talking about? What model router, processor, sup? How much DRAM?

More routes take up more memory. For example if your taking a full BGP feed you will need 64meg (more likely 96 or 128) of DRAM.

Also, fast-switching / CEF , etc will help since the packet is routed the first time (process switched) and switched after that.

A couple thousand routes shoudn't be a issue or effect performance in current platforms. What routing protocol are you using? You may want to look at summarizing your routes if there are a lot.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Actually I am using very simple routing table. NO BGP, or any other routing protocol. Only static routes. My router is 2600 series, with 64meg dram.

Thanks

Richard

Richard,

The more routes you have and the more masks for those routes the more lookup time is required to find the appropriate next-hop. Routers have gotten very fast in doing this so unless you have 1000's of static entries your look up time would be almost unmeasureable.

Hope this helps you,

Don

Thanks Don.
