RP PIM-SM

I have two routers directly connected on two differents VLANs. The second router acts as a redundant router when the other fails. Multicats traffic shall be routed from one VLAN to the other through the redundant routers by using PIM SM.

In this situation where the multicast routing have only one hop to reach the destination VLAN, is it really necessary to configure Rendez-vous Point or Auto-RP ?

Re: RP PIM-SM

Yes, I believe you need the RP to run in sparse mode.

If you have the routers set for sparse-dense, the lack of an RP will cause the system to run in dense mode (generally more traffic to more unnecesary places, at least initially).

Good Luck

Scott
