Running default software

I have managed to load the IOS (c2500-js-l.120-9.bin) for 2500 series router. I loaded successfully but the router is still running the default software. I cannot move out of router(boot)> prompt. I tried using the key ctrl ^z or end but invain. Please assist.

Re: Running default software

Do a sh flash and make sure you have the IOS in the flash. If you, do the following from config terminal mode

boot system flash flash:c2500-js-l.120-9.bin

config-register 0x2102

Type in "end", do a "write mem" and reload

Router(boot)(config)#config-reg 0x2102

Re: Running default software

You shall enter to the ROM Montitor pressing Ctrl+Break while the router is loading, and change the registry configuration whit the confreg command, you will be asked to modify the boot settings, then you can choose where do you want to start de router, there are 3 options:

0 = ROM Monitor

1 = The Helper Image

2-15= Flash

Surely your actual setting is 1, that's why the router is loading the IOS in the ROM, You shall type 2 to boot form yor new image of IOS.

This is an Example:

rommon 1 > confreg

Configuration Summary

enabled are:

load rom after netboot fails

console baud: 9600

boot: image specified by the boot system commands

or default to: cisco2-C1600

do you wish to change the configuration? y/n [n]: y

enable "diagnostic mode"? y/n [n]:

enable "use net in IP bcast address"? y/n [n]:

disable "load rom after netboot fails"? y/n [n]:

enable "use all zero broadcast"? y/n [n]:

enable "break/abort has effect"? y/n [n]:

enable "ignore system config info"? y/n [n]:

change console baud rate? y/n [n]:

change the boot characteristics? y/n [n]: y

enter to boot:

0 = ROM Monitor

1 = the boot helper image

2-15 = boot system

Re: Running default software

How big is this image? And how much memory do you have?

Community Member

Re: Running default software

The image file is 2.62 mb. The memory is 8MB.

Community Member

Re: Running default software

are u sure the image is loaded in the flash?

make show flash to see if the image is really loaded.

if it is not u should make a serial download of the image (via console port under rommon> or >) use Xmodem protocol for the download if possible.

Check in config if statement "service config" is present.
