Recently I contacted an authoritative source regarding saving cisco catalyst 3550 switch configurations for a later use. The reason for doing this would be to replace a failed switch with its saved configurations. To do this we need to copy config.txt and vlan.dat separately to the new switch. I was wondering whether this all be combined into one running config file and upload to the switch for ease of use. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If VTP mode is transparent, the VLAN info are also saved in the switch running
configuration file and you can just back up your run/start-up config

Please make sure you are running 12.1.9 and above to do this
