We're running a couple of 6509 with Supevisor IOS 12.1(8a)E5.
Does anyone have a working solution on how to backup the vlan.dat file, either thru' SNMP or by other means (RSH,SSH)?
Same question for 2924XL with IOS 12.0(5)XU.

Why don't you just copy it from flash to tftp server?

How 'bout:
copy vlan.dat tftp://hostname/some/path
just like you'd write the config to a tftpserver.
this works at least for the 2924XL

That requires login to the box, which could be OK thru' SSH.
I guess SCP might work too.
What I want is an automated backup to run from my management station, preferably thru' SNMP, that would pull the files from the switches.
We already do that for CatOS configs.
I was hoping someone had the right set of SNMP MIB variables to set/get.

Would you please tell me the way you are using on CatOS switches configs? What MIB variables are you using?
Thanks,
Milan

Here's how to do it on a UNIX box with Openview.
Change vars to fit your own needs and swap "private" with your SNMP write community:
# Create File
/usr/bin/touch $workdir/$tempfile
# Allow tftp to write
/usr/bin/chmod ugo+rw $workdir/$tempfile
# Set File Name
/opt/OV/bin/snmpset -c private $switchid .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.1.5.2.0 OctetStringASCII $reldir/$tempfile
# Set Tftp Server Address
/opt/OV/bin/snmpset -c private $switchid .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.1.5.1.0 OctetStringASCII "10.100.15.4"
# Set Card Number
/opt/OV/bin/snmpset -c private $switchid .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.1.5.3.0 Integer 1
# Set Function Number
/opt/OV/bin/snmpset -c private $switchid .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.1.5.4.0 Integer 3
#
# wait for tftp transfer to finish
/usr/bin/sleep 30
#
# read result:
/opt/OV/bin/snmpget -c private $switchid .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.1.5.5.0
