SCHAN ERROR INTR error on Catalyst 2950

I have a Catalyst 2950, IOS version 12.1(20)EA1a, with the following log messages:

SCHAN ERROR INTR: unit=1 SRC=6 DST=5

OPCODE=20 ERRCODE=5

SCHAN ERROR INTR: unit=1 SRC=6 DST=5

OPCODE=20 ERRCODE=5

SCHAN ERROR INTR: unit=1 SRC=6 DST=5

OPCODE=20 ERRCODE=5

SCHAN ERROR INTR: unit=1 SRC=6 DST=5

OPCODE=20 ERRCODE=5

As a result, the c2950 became unreachable and I had to reload it.

I can't find any information on cisco.com. Is it an hardware problem?

Does the 2950 need to be replaced?

Thanks

Stefano

Hi Stefano,

Yhere are the details you could be hitting the following bug:

CSCdv83336 Bug Details

Under certain level of traffic load, the switch will start logging the

following messages on the console:

SCHAN ERROR INTR: SRC=6 DST=5 OPCODE=20 ERRCODE=5

and after a few seconds, the switch will stop passing any traffic. In some

cases, the switch seemed still forwarding broadcast and multicast traffic,

which will cause STP problem if the switch has redundant link and is not

supposed to be the root for the VLAN, as both port will go forwarding.

The same error message has been identified in CSCdu87836.

An assessment of the impact

Unit stops passing any traffic.

WORKAROUND

Several units were returned by CISCO. The units were re-screened to the

latest test program, and failed the SDRAM memory test.

Customer should RMA unit back to Cisco.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Ankur,

in our network there are hundreds of c2950.

Is this bug affecting particular groups of serial numbers?

Thanks

Stefano

HI Stefano,

This is a bug and there is no feild notice for the same so I do not think that there is group of serial numbers which are affected but yes on any switch if you get this error you can open a TAC and get it replaced from Cisco.
