Secondary Ethernet Addressing

Is there a limit to the number of secondary addresses you can add to the ethernet interface of a router? (In particular a 3640)

Re: Secondary Ethernet Addressing

I’m pretty sure only one secondary address per interface but you can create hundreds of sub-interfaces (Virtual, 1 Physical) and put an IP address on each of those.

You can have more than one secondary addresses under an interface but I don't remember the limit.

Re: Secondary Ethernet Addressing

I've actually seen 8 secondary addresses on top of the primary address on one interface. I also recall a similar question on this forum about the same thing, and someone responded that they thought there was no limit. Seems there would be SOME type of limit.

Check the Command Reference for your version of IOS. Perhaps you can find it there. If not, then perhaps it is unlimited!

I remember seeing 32 in one configuration.

I've seen 8 several times. I've been told there is no limit, find that hard to beleive. It must be way up there, though!
