secrets AND port user/passwd resets

Hey

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

I just got a 2621 router with IOS ver. 12.0(7)T. I connect via the console port and power it on, it boots up and then asks for username/password.

I then follow the standard "Password Recovery" guide, and it goes fine, until the "copy startup-config running-config". After the last command, I can't do anything, because of the console port user/passwd thing.

My ? is - how to "follow" the standard password recovery guide, when the console port needs a user/password?

Regards

Did you change the confreg back to 0x2102? After you did the copy start run command did you change the enable secret\pass to a new pass, remove the username command from the switch and go into line con 0 and remove the login local, login and password commands?

If you do these things and copy the config to startup, reload the router and you should be good.

Re: secrets AND port user/passwd resets

Hey

Yes - first confreg 0x2102(and 0x2142), reset, enable, copy start running, it loads the old config, and the promt changes from Router# to "hostname"#. After that, I can't continue, because I get a "authorization failure" after every command I try to run. I figured out it's because of the username/password on the CTY line.

Re: secrets AND port user/passwd resets

Does your config have the 'aaa new-model' command, if so, remove it. Or was it the privilege level that was assigned to the con 0 port itself? You could try keeping the confreg 2142, configing the fa0/0 interface with an IP, then tftp the startup-config to your tftp server 'copy nvram:startup-config tftp:', modify it, tftp it back to the router, then change the confreg, then copy start run.

I've never tried this, but in theory it should work? LMK, if you try it, and if it works.
