is it possible for me to find out the actual speed of the link connected to my serial interface on the switch ? does it auto detect it ?

Do you mean Copper interface (RJ-45 (BaseT)) or Fiber (SFP or GBIC)?
If yes, show interface command will show you the actual speed, duplex.
if not, Please explain more!
