Serial to Serial connection

I have to connect serial to serial between 2 Cisco router: Cisco 1600 series & Cisco 1005 respectively, with all IP configured. But they can't seems to connected, nor ping to one another.

I know something must be configure when Serial to Serial connection is used.

Anyone can advise me on that?

Thanks.

Re: Serial to Serial connection

What's your (wide area network) protocol encapsulation? i.e. Are you using HDLC, SDLC, ATM, Frame?

Can you see the routers' CDP neighbors? Are you serial up/up? When you try to ping, do you get "unreachables?" Or "no response?"

Re: Serial to Serial connection

I will assume that the routers are connected back to back with no modem or CSU via one DTE and one DCE cable ?

If this is the case then you have to configure the DCE interface to provide the clock. This is an interface configuration command:

config term

interface Serial0

clock rate ?

where ? is one of the following clockrates :

1200

2400

4800

9600

19200

38400

56000

64000

72000

125000

148000

250000

500000

800000

1000000

1300000

2000000

4000000

Note that RS232 will only run up to 500k I think and that V.35 can run faster - I am unsure of the limits but there is a physical limit of the electronics in the serial interface for either type of serial applique.

I hope that's what you were looking for ?
