server vs switch port settings - 100/full vs AUTO 100/full

Does anyone have experience changing switch port settings on 2900 to 5000 series switches while the server is up and running ?

If HPUX, AIX &/or SUN servers are set for 100/full and corresponding switch port is AUTO 100/full, can switch port be hard coded to 100/full while server is up and in production ?

For a duplex setting on a switch port to take effect you must reset the switch port

I have done this using ms exchange, proxies and DNS/DHCP boxes. The rx / tx will only be adjusted if you make changes off 100 full.

Hardware: 6500, 55xx, 3548xl, 40xx switch

James,

As you explained that the ports on the switch are already in a-100/a-full. This should look like this:

Port Name Status Vlan Duplex Speed Type

----- -------------------- ---------- ---------- ------ ----- ------------

3/12 FIREWALL connected 50 a-full a-100 10/100BaseTX

...

This means that the speed & duplex settings from the client have been negociated and the switch has cached the settings of 100FD for this port. Dave: Hardcoding 100FD on the switch will not need the port to be reset as stated. Please visit this link for more information:

James, as per my posting before, you should not expext any difficulties when changing the switch settings from a-full to FD and a-100 to 100.
